No trip to the Outer Banks would be complete without a day trip down US 12 South.

Past the sleepy trio villages and continuing through the 12 miles of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore you approach the first of the Hatteras Island southern villages - Avon. Prior to 1883 Avon was known as Kinnakeet. Like all Outer Banks villages, if you were not a member of the Coast Guard Life Saving Station, you were a fisherman or a boat builder. Today Avon's oceanfront and strips along Highway 12 cater to vacationers.

The entrance to the NC Ferry System to Ocracoke is at the southern tip of Hatteras Village offering free transportation to the quaint island of Ocracoke.
